Fun with Food Mathematics

Pi Day 2018

When you have a child with feeding issues, you’re always looking to do fun things with food…anything that may, by some chance, interest your child in perhaps trying something new.  Truth be told, it doesn’t often have that result…but we sure have a lot of fun in the process!

Our Pi Day 2018 Celebration

Pi Keep Calm and Eat Pi Today 3.14

My sweet girl has always been very interested in everybody’s favorite things.  She doesn’t limit herself to favorite colors (of which she has 9!!!) like most of us do.  No sireee.  She wants to know your favorite number, favorite shape, favorite letter…etc.

Given that I’m a bit of a math geek, I couldn’t stick with just a regular old integer.  Instead, I told her that my favorite number is pi.  Which, of course, meant that I had to tell her what pi was.

As such, from an early age, she knew that pi was an irrational number, and that it is used in calculations involving circles (her favorite shape). She also knows that we often round it off to 3.14, and that Pi Day is therefore celebrated on March 14.

Pi Day Food

So yesterday, we celebrated Pi Day.  We served chicken pot pie and apple pie.  We also had biscuits and applesauce in little cups, because those were both circles.  And I served donut holes, too, since those are spheres.

While we usually try to keep the television off at dinner, I decided to make an exception for Pi Day.  We turned on the TV to YouTube, and I showed the kids a couple of videos and songs about Pi Day.  As a result, they got a math lesson, sang about Pi for the rest of the night, and thought it was great fun!

Pi Day Videos

In case you are interested in showing your kids a few Pi Day videos, here were our favorites:

Using the tune of American Pie, this one was my kids’ absolute favorite this year!  We all sang it over and over again.  (For the record, there’s another song out there called “Mathematical Pi” like this one, but that one has some language that I did not deem appropriate for my children.  So if you want to show your kids a pi song, please screen them beforehand.)

Based on the 867-5309 Jenny song, this one is made us laugh.  And it manages to sneak in some important math information as well!

This Pi Day rap is a great combination of Eminem and Pi.  My kids didn’t love it, but I thought it was hilarious.  Older kids and especially teenagers familiar with Eminem music would likely find it enjoyable.

I hope to do more next year for Pi Day…maybe incorporate some fun art projects, or perhaps have the kids actually make a pie.  In the meantime, though, even this simple Pi Day was a hit with the kids!
